Gum disease typically results from bacteria that gets into pockets between teeth. The best way to prevent gum disease and deterioration is to have plaque removed during regular cleanings. Every time we clean your teeth, we examine your gums for signs of the early stages of gingivitis.
In its early stages, gum disease will often cause gums to redden and bleed easily. As gingivitis progresses, the gums recede and expose more of the tooth, like in the illustration. This is the origin of the phrase, "long in the tooth." The term came into use hundreds of years ago to indicate an older person, and older individuals are more likely to be afflicted with gum disease than younger people.
Another common symptom of gingivitis is sensitive teeth. If your teeth have become sensitive to hot or cold foods and beverages, you are probably overdue for a cleaning.
