Crowns can be used both for structural and cosmetic purposes. When a tooth is cracked or broken — or if it has simply deteriorated from too many cavities and old fillings — the solution is to insert a crown. In most cases, the tooth to be crowned has its outer layers removed, leaving a stump that is firmly rooted in the gums. The crown fits over the stump to provide a strong and attractive replacement.
In the past, crowns were usually made from gold and often coated with a porcelain finish. Newer technology allows us to work with ceramics and porcelain to achieve beautiful results without sacrificing strength.
A crown can also be used with an implant in cases where there is no longer an adequate portion of remaining tooth for the crown to connect to.
