bridges

When a patient loses a permanent tooth and has a gap between two healthy teeth, the lost tooth can generally be replaced by a bridge. The bridge is simply an artificial tooth built to fit perfectly into the space. It is anchored to the existing teeth on each side. Bridges can be built from a varity of materials to provide strength.

Bridges are not added simply to make the smile look better. They provide needed structure and protection for the teeth they are anchored to. Without a bridge, those teeth will begin to move into the vacant area, and they will be more vulnerable to damage.

Typically, patients who have lost a tooth will avoid biting or chewing on the side of the mouth with the gap, because the area no longer feels solid. A bridge brings back the strength to the area and confidence to the patient.

We highly recommend replacing missing teeth promptly. The longer a gap exists, the greater the chance of damage to surrounding teeth.
